Paper Abstract:      In nowadays a number of studies are available regarding the advantages that free / open source software (or FS/OSS) can provide for education. Common arguments in favor of FS/OSS are low acquiring costs, better security, greater efficiency and e-learning software that improve the educational process. A point that also suggests the use of FS/OSS is the relation of FS/OSS's methodology with the process of scientific research. However, we feel that introducing FS/OSS in education must be preceded by a preliminary research that investigates the ability of instructors to respond to the administrative needs of such a project. This paper is a part of a research we conducted in secondary level schools of northern Greece to address this issue. The current part was focused on the personal knowledge and experience that instructors have with FS/OSS in an effort to determine what are the preliminary steps needed so that such an attempt become more feasible. We also present similar studies from other countries in comparison. The results showed that instructors have a rather poor knowledge and experience regarding FS/OSS and that are in need of more information and training before we can successfully and efficiently introduce FS/OSS to our schools.
